The triumph of Abrasco's Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva

Maria Cecília de Souza Minayo Romeu Gomes Antonio Augusto Moura da Silva About the authors

I believe it was Dom Helder Câmara who coined the following phrase: “I have never heard of a baby that was born already able to walk.” This saying is very appropriate in the case of Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, which has steadily ascended the route to its consolidation step by step. We progressed to two issues per year between 1996 and 2001; to four issues per year between 2002 and 2006; to six issues per year from 2007 to 2010; and to 12 issues per year thereafter11 Minayo MCS, Gomes R. Ciência & Saúde Coletiva no contexto nacional e internacional da divulgação científica. Cien Saude Colet 2015; 20(7):2013-2022.. We now receive around 4,000 original papers a year and have mobilized a dedicated team of editors-in-chief, associates and peer and ad-hoc reviewers from the Editorial Board from Brazil and around the world! More than 1,000 people per year are involved in creating the body of work. All this is only possible due to the legitimation and desire of the Scientific Community of the area and thanks to the steadfast dedication of those who oversee the editorial and promotion process22 Asnake M. The importance of scientific publication in the development of public health. Cien Saude Colet 2015; 20(7):1972-1973..

Today, this message is to inform all our contributors that our Journal has surpassed its previous JCR ranking and risen more than 1 point in its impact factor: 1,008 for the first time. In other words, “it has broken the sound barrier!” The efforts, especially with regard to the translation of the texts into English, are producing results. What has been achieved may appear insignificant to Foreign Journals with a high impact factor that have totally different backgrounds and contexts! However, in the local context seen from the perspective of internationalization, this is a very good result, since few journals in Brazil have attained this feat. And those who work in achieving this success know how important the small but steady steps we have been taking really are. Our special and heartfelt thanks go to the staff of the Journal's executive team!

In the field of Public Health, our Journal continues to be - together with Cadernos de Saúde Pública and Revista de Saúde Pública - among the top three leaders in the area with more than 60% of everything that is published. In this respect, it would seem that the longevity of a journal is an important factor: in first place in the JCR is Revista de Saúde Pública, which was first published 53 years ago (JCR 1,960); in second place, there is Cadernos de Saúde Pública that appeared 35 years ago (JCR 1,117) and, in third place, Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva, which has now been in existence for a full 24 years (1,008). Our journal has been ranked in first place in Google Scholar (https://scholar.google.com/citations?view_op=top_venues&hl=pt-BR&vq=pt) for the past four years. It all stems from believing that it can be achieved with plenty of work, commitment and dedication! And, we are proud of it!

Our arduous task as editors does not end here. The big news is the upcoming window for open science, which SciELO has invited us to participate in and that will soon be a reality. Revista Ciência & Saúde Coletiva is keen to be an integral part of this process and make the achievements, difficulties and challenges of the Unified Health System known worldwide. It is an exceptional alternative that addresses social inequalities and can offer access to the majority of the population to compete with the expensive and voracious sectoral market.

We are not talking here about the significance and content of the output that the Journal publishes, as it is all about the construction of the SUS. This is an issue that has already been discussed22 Asnake M. The importance of scientific publication in the development of public health. Cien Saude Colet 2015; 20(7):1972-1973.

Today is a day for applause and celebration, because the achievement is a victory for the whole sector and for the entire field of Public Health!
