Ever forward-thinking with an eye to the future and a firm commitment to increasing knowledge, forward-looking management, and the highly effective operation of the SUS, Ciência & Saúde Coletiva (C&SC) has been forging the arduous path of creating its own identity. A collective work of authors, tireless associate editors, reviewers, the editorial board, executive editors and dedicated and attentive editors-in-chief, the Journal presents the public with an in-depth view of the professional consensus in the area of health. As the journal embarks on its 28th year of existence it shows the commitment, persistence, and especially the purpose and actions, that have made it important for the country. With a seemingly unbroken trajectory in synthesizing what is published nationally and internationally in the best journals11 Carvalho MS, Mansur V, Guimarães C, Lima LD, Coeli CM. Da publicação acadêmica à divulgação científica. Cad Saude Publica 2021; 37(7):e00140821. in the field of disseminating knowledge and overcoming adversity and challenges as occurs with any living organism composed of thousands of active and intercommunicating cells with tenacity, the journal has attempted to fulfill its professional goals.
Its primary objective, namely to ensure that science and technology generated in the SUS and for the SUS, remains a beacon for all those who produce it22 Giovanelli L, Machado CV. Sistema universal de saúde e cobertura universal: desvendando pressupostos e estratégias. Cien Saude Colet 2018; 23(6):1763-1776.. Thus, in 2022, 12 editions and 417 articles were published on the most wide-ranging topics in the health industry. Some editions should be highlighted for their relevance: Analysis of the process of deinstitutionalization of people with mental problems; Main infectious diseases present in the country today; SUS management challenges; Equity and justice in health; Diversity and health; Health of the prison population. Also a commemorative edition was published for the bicentennial of the Independence of Brazil, with the title “Health in Brazil in the 19th Century”. Of the 417 articles, 317 were published in or translated into English (76%) with the collaboration of 1,694 Brazilian authors and 134 foreign authors from the following countries: the United States, Mexico, Argentina, Portugal, Chile, Colombia, Spain, China and Iran. C&SC was also honored that due to the evaluation reports of Post-Graduate Courses issued by CAPES, the Journal has garnered the highest A1 classification in Qualis.
Based on the best metrics, C&SC has ranked in first place in Brazil among all journals in all areas for five consecutive years in Google Scholar with a 72/97 rating in the H5M5 index; and its impact index increased from 1.069 last year to 1.971 in 2022 in the JCR. From 1996 (when it was established) to 2022, the Journal has published 286 editions, 7,325 documents and 2,015,808 references. It had 1,121,979 hits on SciELO in the last three years. In 2022, there was a substantial reduction in the time between approval and publication of manuscripts, from as long as eighteen months to currently a maximum of six months. Scientific knowledge has also gained relevance on social media. The journal is present in online networks, with pages on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter, thereby empowering scientific communication.
The current goals are to increase the number of articles with research data listed in the Scielo Data online directory, as well as to encourage authors to submit their originals to Scielo Preprints along with efforts to consolidate open science practices3.
With the pandemic under tighter control, the editorial team returned to its face-to-face activities after two and a half years of distance working. During the entire period of risk of contagion by COVID-19, work continued to be rigorously carried out, with no delays in publication, overcoming all the difficulties imposed by “off-site” working.
Here’s to a new year full of peace, hope and happier days for all of us who create Ciência & Saúde Coletiva! Our gratitude extends to all, and we have a great deal to celebrate!
