Physician with dual specialties in family medicine and hygiene & epidemiology, as well as a master’s degree in environmental health. Assistant professor and adjunct researcher at Cuba’s National Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology Institute, Dr Corona-Miranda’s research focuses on mental health (including suicide); injury-associated mortality in Cuba; and economic evaluation of Heberprot-P, an innovative Cuban treatment for diabetic foot ulcers. She is principal investigator for the mental health chapter of Cuba’s National Health Survey.
Architect and urban planner. Mr Coyula is a consultant to Cubasolar, the leading nongovernmental organization promoting the use of renewable energy in Cuba, and is a member of the Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba, where he serves on the Commission for City, Architecture and Culture. His long career has encompassed research and policy in the areas of agricultural, industrial, neighborhood and community development. He has lectured widely at over 20 universities and research institutions throughout Latin America, the USA and Europe.

Dr Cruz is an associate professor at the Medical University of Havana. His work as adjunct researcher at the National Endocrinology Institute focuses on endocrine diseases and pregnancy, for which he received the 2009 National Health Award.
Psychologist, with a master’s degree in clinical psychology and doctorate in health sciences. Dr Fabelo-Roche is a full professor and senior researcher at the Medical University of Havana, with research interests in health and wellbeing, health promotion, and addiction prevention.
Ricardo A. González-Menéndez MD PhD DrSc
Psychiatrist. Consulting professor at the Enrique Cabrera Medical Faculty of the Medical University of Havana and consultant in the teaching service at Havana’s Rogelio Paredes Psychiatric Hospital. Dr González is a member of the Cuban Academy of Sciences and the Cuban Psychiatric Society, and is president of Cuba’s National Medical Ethics Commission as well as the Academic Committee for Training on Alcoholism and other Addictions.
Clinical geneticist with a master’s degree in clinical genetics and doctorate in medical sciences. A member of the Ministry of Public Health’s Research and Technology Assessment Division in Havana and associate professor at the Medical University of Havana, Dr Portuondo-Sao’s research focuses on causes of cognitive disability in Cuba. She was a member of the coordinating committee of the study on disabilities reported in this issue.
Silvia J. Venero-Fernández MD MS
Physician with dual specialties in family medicine and hygiene & epidemiology, and a master’s degree in environmental health. Dr Venero-Fernández heads the Department of Epidemiology at Cuba’s National Institute of Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology in Havana and is also consulting professor at the University of Nottingham (UK). Her teaching and research focus on non-communicable diseases, particularly chronic respiratory conditions. Since 2010, she has coordinated the Cuban pediatric asthma cohort study.
