Regla C. Broche-Candó MD MS

Family physician and neonatologist, with a master’s degree in infectious diseases. Dr Broche is associate professor at the Medical University of Havana’s Enrique Cabrera Medical Faculty and staff neonatologist at the William Soler University Children’s Hospital. Her research interests include neonatal infections and predictors of neonatal surgery outcomes.

Carla Castillo-Laborde MS MA

Commercial engineer with master’s degrees in economics and international health policy. Ms Castillo-Laborde is a researcher at the Center for Epidemiology and Health Policy at the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago, Chile and health economics adviser to the Social Policy Office of Chile’s Finance Ministry. Her fields of research focus on health reform, health system financing and evaluation of social projects.

Leonardo Cristiá-Lara

Biochemist and molecular biologist. Mr Cristiá-Lara is currently completing a master’s degree in neurobiology at the University of Zurich, Switzerland. During his undergraduate studies at the University of Havana, his research won him multiple awards, including a special award from Cuba’s Molecular Immunology Center.

Vielka González-Ferrer MD

Biostatistician. Dr González-Ferrer is an assistant professor at the Medical University of Villa Clara and member of the Scientific Council of the Ernesto Che Guevara Heart Center in Santa Clara. She is currently pursuing doctoral studies at Cuba’s National School of Public Health.

Erwin H. Hernández-Rincón MD MS PhD

Public health physician. Dr Hernández-Rincón holds master’s degrees in health system governance & management and in primary care research, as well as a doctorate in clinical research. A professor at the Center for Community Health Studies of the Universidad de La Sabana’s medical school, he is also a consultant to PAHO and academic coordinator of the Colombian node of PAHO’s Virtual Campus for Public Health.

Josefina Lugo-Alonso MD

Biostatistician. Dr Lugo-Alonso is an associate researcher and assistant professor at Cuba’s National Oncology and Radiobiology Institute. Her studies focus on clinical trials and quality of life and her article in this issue stems from doctoral dissertation research measuring health-related quality of life in cancer patients.

Isabel P. Luis-Gonzálvez MD MS

Epidemiologist with a master’s degree in bioethics. Dr Luis-Gonzálvez is a senior epidemiologist at the Finlay Vaccine Institute. She has published on a broad range of topics related to social determinants of health, equity, governance and community engagement.

Liuber Y. Machado-Zaldívar MS PhD

Biochemist with a master’s degree in molecular biology and doctorate in health sciences. Dr Machado-Zaldivar is an associate researcher at Cuba’s AIDS Research Laboratory. He has published broadly in national and international journals and received the Cuban Academy of Sciences National Award in 2013.

Isabel Matute MPH

Sociologist with a master’s degree in public health. Ms Matute is an assistant professor and researcher in epidemiology and health policy at the Universidad del Desarrollo in Santiago, Chile. She has advised national and international organizations, including UNAIDS, on surveillance and survey methodology. Her research interests also include disabilities, aging and universal health coverage.

Calixto Orozco-Muñoz MD MPH

Family physician with a master’s degree in public health. Dr Orozco-Muñoz is head of family medicine at the Medical University of Villa Clara. His research focuses on maternal and child health, especially in primary care and from a social determinants of health perspective.

Gisela M. Pita-Rodríguez MD MS

Clinical biochemist with a master’s degree in environmental health. Dr Pita-Rodríguez is an associate researcher at the University of Havana and the Cuban Academy of Sciences, and associate professor at the Latin American Medical School in Havana. She heads the Nutritional Anemia Laboratory at Cuba’s National Hygiene, Epidemiology and Microbiology Institute. Her work on nutrition, particularly in women and children, has been widely published internationally and garnered multiple national awards.

Valentín S. Rodríguez-Moya MD PhD

Dual specialist in pediatrics and in intensive care & emergency medicine, with a doctorate in medical sciences. Dr Rodríguez-Moya is a staff pediatrician at Martín Chang Puga General Teaching Hospital in Camagüey Province, Cuba. His work on exogenous pulmonary surfactant to treat pediatric acute respiratory distress has earned him multiple awards.
