Presentation

Electoral periods always lead us to reflect not only about the health situation of our cities, our states, and our country, but also about all aspects of politics. Since its creation, Centro Brasileiro de Estudos de Saúde (CEBES) has contributed with the debate, producing ideas that can help citizens in this important moment.

This issue brings contributions both for the electors and the candidates. The document Radicalizing democracy in order to ensure the public interest on health: CEBES in the city elections encourages candidates to work according to article 196 of the Brazilian Constitution, which states:

Health is a right to all and the state’s obligation, made sure by social and economic policies that aim to reduce the risk of disease and other implications and also to provide universal and equal access to actions and services for its promotion, protection and recovery.

These elections, as mentioned in our editorial, should be useful for the sanitary movement to urgently retake an updated agenda for the sanitary reform. We believe that our editorial, together with the document of the elections and the opinion article by Sonia Fleury, besides other texts in this issue, may be a triggering device for such purpose.

As informed in the previous issue, the covers of this year are inspired in important expressions of the Brazilian culture, referencing the idea that culture is health and life in its broader meaning. Each issue recovers one cultural tradition of our country; and this one pays a tribute to the typical festive celebrations of June in Brazil, the famous ‘hillbilly parties’.

Enjoy your reading!
