Souza, José Maria Pacheco de

Abstract in English:

A solution to the problem of fitting a linear regression with double truncation in the distribution of the dependent variable is obtained, using the maximum likelihood function and an iterative process.
• Plano de amostragem utilizado no estudo de reprodução humana no distrito de São Paulo Artigos

Silva, Eunice Pinho de Castro

Abstract in Portuguese:

Abstract in English:

This work presents the sampling procedure used to select the sample got for a "Human Reproduction Study in the District of São Paulo" (Brazil), done by the Department of Applied Statistics of "Faculdade de Higiene e Saúde Pública da Universidade de São Paulo". The procedure tried to solve the situation which resulted from the limitation in cost, time and lack of a frame that could be used in order to get a probability sample in the fixed term of time and with the fixed cost. It consisted in a two stage sampling with dwelling-units as primary units and women as secondary units. At the first stage, it was used stratified sampling in which sub-districts were taken as strata. In order to select primary units, there was a selection of points ("starting points") on the maps of subdistricts by a procedure that was similar to that one called "square grid" but differed from this in several aspects. There were fixed rules to establish a correspondence between each selected "starting point" and a set of three dwelling units where at least one woman of the target population lived. In the selected dwelling units where more than one woman of target population lived, there was a sub-sampling in order to select one of them. In this selection each woman living in the dwelling unit had equal probability of selection. Several "no-answer" cases and correspondent instructions to be followed by the interviewers are presented too.
• Sub-registro de nascimento no distrito de São Paulo Artigos

Milanesi, Maria Lucila; Silva, Eunice Pinho de Castro

Abstract in English:

Data have been collected on the births occurred in 1965, on whether they have been registered and on the reason in case they have not, at the time of the investigation on: Human Reproduction in the District of São Paulo carried out with basis on a sample of the non-single, 15 to 49 years old female population. When the time considered for registration of a birth was up to 15 days, which is the case when the father is the one who registers the child, the under-registration was 4.5%, but with the extended time of 45 days, when the mother is supposed to register the birth, the under-registration was 3.2%. The main factor for not registering the births was connected with the responsibility of the husband and in about 80% of all cases, the delivery took place in a hospital.

Cotillo Z., Luis G.

Abstract in Portuguese:

Abstract in English:

Levels of neutralizing antibodies against rubella were determined on 778 pregnant women attending the Outpatient Department of the "Casa Maternal Leonor Mendes de Barros". Of the 778 women, 600 had titers of 4 and over (dilution 1:4). The total group presented an average age of 25.6 years. For the 15 to 19 years group, 79.43% of the patients had titers of 4 and over; in the remaining groups the corresponding percentages were: 20 to 24 years, 75.69%; 25 to 29 years, 77.38%; 30 to 34 years, 82,50%; 35 to 39 years, 74.58% and 40 to 44 years, 50.00%. Comparison of these results shows that percentages of positivity at ages between 15 and 39 years are very similar but those of group 40 to 44 years are markedly lower. The difference is statistically significant at the level of 0.01. Regarding the color, 79.14% of the 350 white females, 75.56% of the 90 negro females, 75.71% of the 317 halfbreeds and 71.43% of the 21 yellow females (Japanese) showed antibodies at the above mentioned level. For epidemiologic surveys, on large scale, the neutralization test presents certain practical disadvantages, which renders ample study of correlation of the results of this test with those of other tests (among which haemagglutination inhibition test stands out) necessary.

Abstract in Portuguese:

Abstract in English:

The author presents the results of a survey for respiratory syncytial virus and adenovirus complement fixing antibodies and parainfluenza viruses 1, 2, 3 haemagglutination inhibition antibodies in a group of 972 chidren between 3 months and 14 years of age. The filter paper method of collecting whole blood was used. Altogether, the percentage of children with complement fixing antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus and adenovirus were respectively 34.6% and 47.7%; 46.8%, 54.1% and 66.6% possessed haemagglutination inhibition antibodies against parainfluenza vírus types 1, 2 and 3. A study on the distribution of the antibodies according to different age groups was also conducted. The present study was undertaken, in order, to examine the distribution of antibodies according to sex and home localization. The following results were obtained: 32.3% of the boys possessed antibodies against respiratory syncytial virus, 49.2% against adenovirus and 60.1%, 65.5% and 78.3% against parainfluenza viruses 1, 2,3 respectively; percentages in girls were 37.4%, 45.9%, 31.1'%, 41.2% and 52.9% respectively. In the rural area 44.8% of the children possessed antibodies against respiratory syncytial vírus, 70.1% against adenovirus, 43.8% against parainfluenza vírus type 1 and 46.8% and 65.4% against parainfluenza viruses 2, 3; in the urban area the percentages observed were, respectively, 30.5%, 38.7%, 47.9%, 57.1% and 67.1%.

Abstract in English:

The problem of poliomyelitis in the county of São Paulo, Brazil, was studied from 1933 to 1967. It emphasizes the period of 1962 to 1967, when the author analizes the relation between the variation in the incidence of the disease and the mass vaccination campaigns with the live virus vaccine attenuated accomplished at that time. Based on the data presented he concludes that in 1967, when the morbidity rate by poliomyelitis was 0.6 for 100,000 inhabitantes, it was possible to get the control of that disease in the county of São Paulo.
